Protests against Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor have been postponed in protest of the lawyer’s harassment. The magistrate has been sent on a two-day leave.
The decision was taken by Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Zulfiqar Hayat and Dhaka Bar Association president Iqbal Hossain among others after an hour-long discussion on Wednesday (December 23rd).
Dhaka Bar Association president Iqbal Hossain confirmed the information to reporters, adding that Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur has been sent on a two-day leave. The court will remain closed till further notice. Besides, a written application will be sent to the law ministry comprising 12 benches to withdraw the judge.
Meanwhile, outraged lawyers locked the courtroom this morning in protest of harassment of lawyer Rubel Ahmed. They demanded the removal of the magistrate.
Hannan Bhuiyan, a member of the Dhaka Bar Association, said, “A lawyer’s case was scheduled to be heard in the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor on Tuesday.” The trial of the CMM court is scheduled to start at 10:30 am. But Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor appeared in the court two and a half hours later. Then the lawyer wants to know the reason. For this reason, Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur made him stand on the fence. We have protested today. I want to remove him. ‘
