Police have arrested four people, including two top leaders of the new JMB, from Shibganj upazila in Bogra with firearms and explosives. They were arrested in a raid at Chandihara Eidgah ground in Shibganj upazila on Friday night.
Members of Bogra District Detective Police in collaboration with the LIC branch of the police headquarters took part in the arrest operation.
This information was given by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rajshahi Range of Bangladesh Police Abdul Baten at a press briefing organized by the district police at the Bogra Police Super Office on Saturday afternoon.
He said the arrested persons were activists of the new JMB. A foreign pistol, two rounds of ammunition, two cartridges, a one-gun shooter, a machete, three knives, one kg of explosives powder and grenade making equipment were recovered from them.
They are Tanvir Ahmed alias Abu Ibrahim (25) of Tarsrirampur village in Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj, head of media branch and Zakaria Jamil (31) of Jagatpora village in Bhunapur upazila of Tangail. Abu Saeed (32) of the village. Among them Tanvir Ahmed is a student of Jahangirnagar University and Atiqur Rahman is a student of North South University.
At a press conference, the police DIG said Tanvir Ahmed’s wife was arrested in January after raiding Tanvir’s house in Ashulia, along with militant books and drone-making equipment. Tanvir is a fugitive accused in the case filed in that incident. He admitted that he was planning sabotage by making drones. Another accused Zakaria Jamil is the head of the media branch of the new JMB.
He translated and published in Arabic the registrations published online in Arabic by IS. Jamil is also a fugitive accused in a case in Ashulia. Atiqur is a student in the Department of Pharmacy at North South University. He was in charge of new members and fundraising. He was preparing to go to the Middle East to fight for Islam.
